Causes Of Female Infertility

For a woman to be fertile, her body must produce healthy egg cells that can be transported to a meeting place with sperm cells, and from there to a well-prepared uterus.  Problems with any of the following can diminish a woman's fertility:

Endometriosis


Endometriosis occurs when the tissue lining the inside of the uterus spreads to the outside, often attaching to the ovaries, fallopian tubes, the uterus' outer surface, the pelvic cavity's lining, or other parts of the lower abdomen. These small pieces of misplaced tissue are sometimes called endometrial lesions or implants. The cause of endometriosis, which occurs only in menstruating women, is unclear.

Female Structural Causes of Infertility

Hydrosalpinx

A hydrosalpinx is a fallopian tube that is filled with fluid. Injury to the end of the fallopian tube (the ampulla) and its delicate fingers (the fimbria) -- often from infection or trauma, causes the end of the tube to close. Glands within the tube produce a watery fluid that collects within the tube, producing a sausage shaped swelling. The fluid can be toxic to early embryo development or may mechanically flush out the embrypfrom the uterus. New studies also suggest the fluid may activate harmful genes.
